You'll see me reference the term "voc" frequently on this site, usually with a "low-" or "no-" preceding it. V.O.C. stands for Volatile Organic Compound. Essentially, they are petroleum products. They contribute to indoor air pollution, sick building syndrome, water and soil contamination, global warming, and ground level ozone. Among other adverse effects, V.O.C.'s are linked to central nervous system disorders and leukemia. Leukemia just killed one of my mentors in the painting field.

Eco-friendly paints have been regarded as being lower quality than traditional finishes. While in the past this may have been true, the low-voc and no-voc products on the market today are so competitive that this painter sees little reason to use anything else. I've been painting with them on and off since 2004, and know from experience which ones work best in which applications. As is the case with standard paints, these paints vary in quality and price. As a client, you will be made aware of the pros and cons of any choices you may have regarding paint quality and price.
