Low-voc and no-voc painting is probably most important on interior projects. Airborne solvents like formaldehyde and benzene have no business in peoples' living or working spaces, and I won't paint with them. Here's why. Fortunately, a growing number of paint manufacturers are responding to public demand for products that don't make them (or their painters) sick. At first, low-voc paints were limited to wall paints, but technology is progressive, and the low-voc stains, clearcoats, and enamels available for me to use today are not only as effective as their poisonous cousins, but in many cases they are higher in quality.
I painted these cabinets with low-voc enamel:

I have shifted to using paint that is completely voc free on walls. The walls in this picture are no-voc paint; the frames are low-voc paint tinted the same color:
